FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION

Entry requirements:

Member of the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine, having completed units 1 (A), 2(B) and 3(C), passed the membership exam and reflective essay (SOMM Diploma).

Fees:

£755.00 (20 credit module at Masters Level)

Course design:

The course is designed to be flexible, but it is recommended that it be completed within a maximum period of 18 months.  Students will be expected to attend the three units of the foundation module where they will be responsible for assisting in the practical groups, assimilating certain teaching points and presenting a topic of choice from the syllabus.  Formative assessment will consist of two written assignments, one video taped presentation (where possible) and mock practicals.  Summative assessment will consist of a practical examination and the presentation of a literature review.  A tutor will be assigned to each Fellowship student and will be available between each module for a telephone tutorial and support.

To prepare Fellowship students to teach the principles and practice of musculoskeletal medicine.  Students will be exposed to various teaching styles and will consider the different learning methods of the membership course students.  Methods of assessment and evaluation will be considered too.

By the end of the course Fellowship students will be able to:

  • Critically apply their extensive knowledge of the principles and practice of musculoskeletal medicine to provide effective teaching and learning in relation to musculoskeletal medicine
  • Critically appraise current educational practice in relation to the teaching of musculoskeletal medicine
  • Design, implement and critically evaluate a range of strategies for the teaching and assessment of learning in relation to musculoskeletal medicine
  • Critically evaluate their performance in teaching and identify and develop strategies for improvement
  • Actively participate with other musculoskeletal medicine teaching colleagues in developing innovative and creative approaches in curriculum development in relation to musculoskeletal medicine

It is strongly recommended that Fellowship students apply to undertake a part-time teaching course in adult education at their local college of further education.

Your application should consist of:

  • Brief CV focusing on previous teaching experience
  • Supporting statement (approx. 500 words) including what you can offer as a Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine teacher
  • Provide the name of a Teaching Fellow, who has taught on a course you have attended, who could act as a referee
  • A copy of your SOMM membership certificate

Applications will be considered by the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship Module Coordinator and committee. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed prior to acceptance on to the course. At interview you will be asked to give a short presentation (8 minutes), to supply evidence of your ongoing CPD/professional portfolio and may be asked to participate in a practical demonstration.

    • Communication and teaching skills
    • Organisational skills
    • Recommendation from existing SOMM Fellow
